This year, Fall AGU returns to San Francisco, CA from December 11-15, 2023. Session title: A019 - Atmospheric and climate impacts of the Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption Session description: The Hunga Tonga (HTHH) volcanic eruption in January 2022 was the most explosive volcanic eruption in the satellite era. The resulting stratospheric water and aerosol plumes have persisted and continue to impact the atmosphere and climate system. This session will focus on observational and modeling studies of HTHH atmospheric and climate impacts. Submissions would include short- and long-term evolution of the water and aerosol plumes, effects on the atmospheric circulation, transport and chemistry (including polar and midlatitude ozone changes), whole atmosphere influences and radiative/climate effects. We especially welcome contributions regarding HTHH impacts on climate and the ozone layer from comprehensive chemistry-climate model simulations.
