2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: Tobias Fischer <fischer@xxxxxxx> The CONVERSE Center <https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://conversecenter.org/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dZ5qv_1ROecdp6sUiEIvRIUDCjfBNMY82JgT1oH3cKcKqObBbowg6oLzcuuRuL80H_9h3LIYIOIBj9Q$> is inviting graduate students and post-docs based in the U.S. to participate in a one-week workshop to design and build a Volcanic Eruption Scenario at the University of New Mexico Campus from July 9 (evening) to July 15 (morning), 2023. We are also inviting experienced volcano scientists to serve as on-call or in-person expert consultants to the CSBI participants. The goal of this yearâ??s CSBI (pronounced â??ces-beeâ??) is to bring together students of volcano science to develop a scenario for the science response to the run-up to and eruption of an arc volcano. The development of eruption scenarios <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://par.nsf.gov/servlets/purl/10298872__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dZ5qv_1ROecdp6sUiEIvRIUDCjfBNMY82JgT1oH3cKcKqObBbowg6oLzcuuRuL80H_9h3LIYsxIoZiI$> is important for volcano science because they advance our understanding of pre- and syn-eruptive processes and highlight the open science questions. Scenarios also help participants to appreciate the complexities of mounting a scientific response under crisis conditions and to practice the coordination and collaboration necessary for an effective response. Participants of the CSBI will work in an in-person and interdisciplinary setting to develop the geophysical and geochemical signals that lead up to the simulated eruption and the observables that will represent the eruption as it evolves. For instance, the scenario-building process will include forecasting of tephra fall, pyroclastic flows, and lava flows during the eruption. The eruption scenario will be based on a realistic framework of events but students collectively can determine the evolution and outcome of the eruption. The resulting materials will be used in a community exercise in the future (later this year or early next) and the CSBI participants will be encouraged to take leadership roles during the exercise. CONVERSE will support travel to Albuquerque, lodging on campus (single rooms in 4-bedroom apartments), meals, and a $500 stipend for up to 14 participants. We will aim to have a broad representation of the subdisciplines of volcanology, including seismology, geodesy, petrology/geochemistry, gas, remote sensing, tephra/ash/lava dispersion, and modeling. We hope to pair experienced students with less experienced students, to encourage peer-to-peer mentoring. As part of the CSBI, participants will also have the opportunity to complete the one-day FEMA-certified course on Volcanic Crisis Awareness that will be taught on the UNM Campus during July 10 - 14. The CSBI will include an introductory lecture, guidance by subject matter experts during the scenario building (either on-site or virtually), a short field trip (TBD), and social and networking activities. We hope that the outcome of the scenario-building process will lead to publications at professional meetings and in scientific journals. *The Deadline for application is May 8. You will be notified by May 16.* If you are an experienced volcano scientist interested in participating as an expert, please apply and indicate that role in the application form.
