The project - "A general model for bubble nucleation and growth in volcanic systems" - is jointly funded by NERC (UK) and NSF (US) and involves teams at Durham University in the UK, and Lehigh University, University of Texas at Austin, and Lafayette College in the US. The UK component of the project will produce a numerical model that captures the physics of bubble nucleation and subsequent growth, building on previous work by the investigator team. The model will be informed by, and validated against, laboratory experiments conducted by the US partners. The successful candidate will have a strong background in numerical modelling/simulation and an interest in the physics of magma. The project will be supervised by Prof Ed Llewellin (Earth Sciences), Dr Fabian Wadsworth (Earth Sciences), and Prof Halim Kusumaatmaja (Physics).
