Duties and Responsibilities

   1. Under general supervision, teach college-level courses in Earth
   Science (formerly Geology and Geophysics) and perform related work
   including, but not limited to, development of teaching strategies,
   instructional materials, and methods which: 1) use current technology in
   instruction where appropriate; 2) integrate instruction of appropriate
   quantitative/logical thinking skills into course contents; 3) develop,
   update and assess the competencies and skills for course Student Learning
   Outcomes; 4) address the learning needs of community college students; and
   5) develop and teach courses using a variety of delivery systems (e.g.,
   face-to-face, online, hybrid and/or other distance delivery formats
   including field trips to neighbor islands) as needed and appropriate.
   2. Develop and maintain a culturally-relevant Earth Science curriculum
   and pathway from within the Collegeâ??s Early College program for efficient
   transfer through Windward CC to UH Manoa and UH Hilo.
   3. Develop and teach place-based field trip classes that focus on the
   unique geology of Hawaii and incorporate Hawaiian culture and mythology, as
   appropriate.
   4. Teaching assignments may include distance education, contract
   teaching, evenings, weekends, early college classes at local high schools,
   including Hawaiian immersion schools, and/or off-campus assignments.
   5. Prepare and revise course outlines, perform course and program-level
   assessments, including program self-studies and annual reports.
   6. Participate in departmental, faculty and administrative committees,
   community service, in service training, and assessment activities.
   7. Independently plan, organize, and carry out instructional and
   non-instructional assignments. including, but not limited to, preparing
   program budget requests, managing program/project budgets, managing
   supplies and equipment inventories, collecting data, preparing reports, and
   providing oversight of chemical waste management (disposal and storage).
   8. Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.
   9. Develop and maintain an approved program of professional
   self-development.
   10. Participate in student recruitment, orientation, retention, and
   graduation activities.
   11. Conduct community outreach and on/off-campus program promotion in
   Earth Science, teach community service courses.
   12. Coordinate Earth Science course offerings, including neighbor island
   field courses, and formats with other University of Hawaii Community
   Colleges in order to promote collaboration, optimize enrollment, and meet
   studentsâ?? academic needs in Earth Science across the UHCC campuses.
   13. Perform other duties as assigned.

 Minimum Qualifications

   1. Masterâ??s degree in Geology/Geophysics.
   2. All minimum qualifications must be from a regionally accredited
   institution and met by the effective date of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications

   1. Ph.D. in Earth Science, Earth, and Planetary Sciences,
   Geology/Geophysics or equivalent.
   2. Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Oceanography or significant
   graduate coursework in oceanography.
   3. Research, field experience, and/or peer-reviewed publications in
   geology, volcanology, oceanography, or other related sciences.
   4. Detailed knowledge of the geology of Hawaii, including instructive
   field sites for field class use across all of the Hawaiian Islands.
   5. Knowledge of current Earth Sciences research taking place in the
   Hawaiian Islands.
   6. Knowledge of and/or ability to incorporate Hawaiian language and/or
   Hawaiian traditional knowledge, values, and practices as they relate to the
   earth sciences into the curriculum.
   7. Successful teaching experience at the university or community college
   level, as substantiated by both student and peer evaluations, in conducting
   lecturer and laboratory courses in Earth Sciences.
   8. Experience and or demonstrated ability to serve as a mentor to
   students engaged in project-based research and/or internships.
   9. Demonstrated ability in curriculum development, including online
   and/or hybrid instruction.
   10. Demonstrated ability in conducting course-level assessment of
   student learning outcomes, analyzing relevant data, and utilizing the
   results to improve instruction.
   11. Successful experience and/or ability to collaborate with community
   organizations and/or relevant industry to promote student learning outside
   of the classroom.
   12. Knowledge and understanding of student-centered learning and the
   community college philosophy.
   13. Knowledge and understanding of Windward Community Collegeâ??s mission.
