The Canary Islands Institute of Volcanology (INVOLCAN) and the Institute of
Technology and Renewable Energy (ITER), Tenerife, Spain, are excited to
announce the 2023 INVOLCAN Summer Science Training Program.

Participants will undertake applied research during a 4-week training
period in the Canary Islands. Each participantâ??s training will focus on one
of a range of topics from volcano and environmental monitoring to social
science. Participants will gain practical insight of applied research by
working side-by-side with INVOLCAN/ITER researchers during fieldwork, and
data collection, analysis, and visualisation activities. Training will be
delivered in English. Spanish-only speakers can be accommodated. The
~4-week programme includes an orientation day and fieldtrip. Participants
will be co-authors on conference presentation(s) which will be submitted to
the largest international conference on Earth Sciences in Europe (European
Geoscience Union Annual Meeting). Training will be delivered in 4 periods,
which will run from 9 June to 7 July, 7 July to 4 August, 4 August to 1
September, and 1 September to 29 September. The cost to the participant is
1000.00 â?¬, which includes housing, day field trip, work related ground
transportation, inter-island travel where applicable, insurance, and
post-course celebration dinner and closing ceremony.

How do I apply?

Applications can be made by sending an email to
SummerTraining2023@xxxxxxxxxxxx containing a statement of motivation (300
words max), curriculum vitae, and preference/s for which topic and training
period. No prior experience is necessary. We value motivation and the
ability to work within a team.

When is the deadline?

Applications will be considered if received before 31st March 23:59 GMT.
Initial offers will be distributed from 15th April.Deposits of 500 â?¬ must
be received by 30th April to guarantee a space in the program.

What is the accommodation?

Accommodation varies according to the focus of the training. For training
based at ITER, participants will be housed in bioclimatic housing at ITER.
These award winning structures are situated next to isolated beaches, and
will require taxi transportation to access shops and services.

For all other training, housing will be situated in Canarian villages with
walking access to shops and services. Accommodation in La Palma, El Hierro
and Lanzarote is shared room backpacker style and mixed-gender.

Our Student Training History

Since 1997, 448 undergraduate and graduate students have spent at least one
month with the geophysics, geochemistry, and environmental studies sections
of our research team since 1997. They have come from 11 countries (Brasil,
Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Senegal, Spain, Trinidad & Tobago,
U.K. and U.S.A.) and 111 universities (87.4 % non-Spanish).
