Session scope:

GMPV10.3
*Interdisciplinary studies of the European intraplate volcanism: origin(s),
links with Variscan structures and Cenozoic rift systems, and present
activity*
The Cenozoïc European intraplate volcanism is temporally and spatially
linked with the Alpine-Pyrenean orogeny and spreads from Spain to Romania
and Bulgaria. It is associated with widespread extensional rifts systems
and local Variscan basement uplifts. Magmatic activity within the European
foreland of the Alpine orogen is typically mafic. It occurs in various
styles, from monogenetic fields to large stratovolcanoes and fissural
basaltic plateaus.

Despite the extensive studies in each region, intraplate volcanism and
magmatism in Europe are only broadly understood. The current signs of
unrest in the Eifel volcanic region (Germany) remind us of the severe
natural hazards (e.g., potential VEI 6 eruption of the Laacher See volcano
in a populated area) that remain difficult to assess in these dormant
regions.

In this interdisciplinary session, we welcome geochemical, geological,
petrological, geodynamical, and geophysical contributions related to all
aspects of the Cenozoïc European intraplate volcanism. We are interested in
studies documenting:
- The deep processes at the origin of the magmatism
- The magmatic plumbing systems from the mantle to volcanoes
- The relationship between inherited Variscan structures and emplacement of
the different volcanic edifices and their morphology
- Approaches and studies to assess the hazard of intraplate volcanic fields

We are also welcoming studies focusing on the current crustal and surface
expressions of the volcanism, such as CO2 degassing (in lakes, wet springs,
and mofettes), regional deformation and uplift, and seismicity. We
encourage abstracts on ongoing data acquisition initiatives to further
foster discussions on ongoing and future projects.
