***Session description:

The importance of transdisciplinary collaborations between scientists and
practitioners/decision-makers engaged in risk assessment and volcanic
crisis management is recognised as fundamental to 'goodâ?? crisis management.
In particular, it is essential that scientific findings are disseminated
and understood by the authorities and civil protection, which implies a
mutual understanding of the possibilities, limitations and constraints of
assessment and communication before and during volcanic crises. Best
practices for volcanic observatories have been proposed in recent years,
and need to be enriched by taking into account the diversity of contexts
(legislative, institutional, environmental...) and by integrating
collaborations with researchers outside the observatories whose work can
benefit the authorities in terms of assessment and decision-making.

One of the unexplored areas in this field is collaboration and
communication around high magnitude events with low probability of
occurrence or very localized events, which can be difficult to assess and
monitor scientifically, and almost impossible for authorities to manage
without development of a crisis situation or even a disaster.

We welcome presentations from volcano observatory scientists, researchers
(including from humanities and social and human sciences), and
practitioners engaged in volcanic risk reduction and crisis management.

Experiences may include collaboration and communication mechanisms
established for joint risk assessment or operational crisis management. The
case studies may include feedback from actual crises or
exercises/trainings, tools and protocols put in place (or to be put in
place) to facilitate transdisciplinary cooperation and communication.

We also welcome presentations on other types of hazards (geological,
hydro-meteorological, health, industrial or others) which, having taken
into account the specificities of volcanic crises, propose real
applications/transfers to improve their management.
Finally, presentations on the management of cross-border risks and crises,
involving a multiplication of interactions and protocols, are also welcome,
in order to explore the possibilities of improving crisis management across
borders.***
