Paula Naomi Irapta, Benjamin van Wyk de Vries, Amy Donovan, Julie Morin ***Session description: The sense of place related to the rocks and landscape held by local populations is an integral factor that conditions their response to any event in their lives, including how they react to natural hazards. This sense of place is a condition of geoheritage and it thus controls how risk plays out in societies that face any type of hazard. This link is especially so with volcanic environments, where the volcano is an essential element of the landscape and culture that is at risk. In this session, we invite (geo)heritage researchers and practitioners, and the broader community of volcanology to explore the importance of cultural heritage and geoheritage in disaster risk reduction. Cultural and geo- heritage are deeply interrelated and both can greatly contribute to reducing exposure to hazards, and contribute to risk education and mitigation. We welcome contributions from all over the globe to discuss the different forms of heritage, what they mean in terms of risk assessment and reduction, and how they can be combined and/or enhanced for this purpose. Contributions are also welcomed to address hazards other than volcanic ones to show how interdisciplinary science can help consider and reduce volcanic risks.
