***Session description:

The sense of place related to the rocks and landscape held by local
populations is an integral factor that conditions their response to any
event in their lives, including how they react to natural hazards. This
sense of place is a condition of geoheritage and it thus controls how risk
plays out in societies that face any type of hazard. This link is
especially so with volcanic environments, where the volcano is an essential
element of the landscape and culture that is at risk.
In this session, we invite (geo)heritage researchers and practitioners, and
the broader community of volcanology to explore the importance of cultural
heritage and geoheritage in disaster risk reduction. Cultural and geo-
heritage are deeply interrelated and both can greatly contribute to
reducing exposure to hazards, and contribute to risk education and
mitigation.
We welcome contributions from all over the globe to discuss the different
forms of heritage, what they mean in terms of risk assessment and
reduction, and how they can be combined and/or enhanced for this purpose.
Contributions are also welcomed to address hazards other than volcanic ones
to show how interdisciplinary science can help consider and reduce volcanic
risks. Contributions may also, for example, focus on how the consideration
of volcanic hazards can help in the valuing , use and conservation of
geosites, geoheritage, and cultural heritage.***
