Masterâ??s thesis (2023_01)* *Title* Probabilistic analysis of the automatic detection of seismic signal in volcanic systems *Description* One of the major problems in the study of volcanic seismicity is the handling of a large amount of data, which includes not only the data acquisition, but also the processing of seismic signals, a process that is especially complex during volcanic crises. The automatic detection and classification of seismic signals is a highly necessary process, which is widely used in several volcano observatories around the world. This masterâ??s thesis will focus on the probabilistic analysis of the automatic detection of seismic signals at northern Chile volcanoes, where it has already been recently implemented for some of the most active systems in this region. *Advisor:* Dr. Pablo Salazar *Co-advisor:* Dr. Susana Layana *University:* Universidad Católica del Norte *Program:* Master in Geological Sciences *City/Country:* Antofagasta, Chile *Program starts:* March 2023 *End of program:* March 2025 *Funding* - Maintenance scholarship awarded by the Millennium Institute on Volcanic Risk Research - Ckelar Volcanoes (ICN2021_038), through the Millennium Initiative Program of the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), belonging to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Research of the Chilean Government. - Inscription costs will be paid by Ckelar Volcanoes. - The expenses related to the research will be fully paid by Ckelar Volcanoes. Doctoral thesis (2023_02)* *Title* Bayesian inference in the evaluation of hazards for northern Chile volcanoes *Description* The variety of physical factors that control volcanic activity, and the boundary conditions of variables that govern these processes, are not well known. Deterministic approaches to assessing volcanic hazards, whilst helpful, lack consideration of uncertainties for processes which appear to exhibit somewhat random behavior. To avoid the bias that expert criteria could have, this work intends to model volcanic hazards from a Bayesian perspective, which takes into account that the process is stochastic and that in most cases a lack of information makes the range of parameter values poorly known. Theoretically, Bayesian inference provides a better evaluation than a deterministic one when the a priori information of the phenomenon is not completely covered by a mathematical model in which all of its variables and boundary conditions are fully represented. This thesis topic therefore seeks to implement this methodology in the evaluation of volcanic hazards at northern Chile volcanoes. It will subsequently compare Bayesian inference with deterministic studies, to identify which provides better performance in the absence of certain monitoring information. *Advisor:* Dr. Pablo Salazar *Co-advisor 1:* Dr. Felipe Aguilera *University:* Universidad Católica del Norte *Program:* Doctorate in Geological Sciences *City/Country:* Antofagasta, Chile *Program starts:* March 2023 *End of program:* March 2027 *Funding* - Maintenance scholarship awarded by the Millennium Institute on Volcanic Risk Research - Ckelar Volcanoes (ICN2021_038), through the Millennium Initiative Program of the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), belonging to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Research of the Chilean Government. - Inscription costs will be paid by Ckelar Volcanoes. - The expenses related to the research will be fully paid by Ckelar Volcanoes.
