*A. Masterâ??s thesis (2023_01)*

*Title*

Probabilistic analysis of the automatic detection of seismic signal in
volcanic systems

*Description*

One of the major problems in the study of volcanic seismicity is the
handling of a large amount of data, which includes not only the data
acquisition, but also the processing of seismic signals, a process that is
especially complex during volcanic crises. The automatic detection and
classification of seismic signals is a highly necessary process, which is
widely used in several volcano observatories around the world. This
masterâ??s thesis will focus on the probabilistic analysis of the automatic
detection of seismic signals at northern Chile volcanoes, where it has
already been recently implemented for some of the most active systems in
this region.

*Title*

Dynamics of magmatic processes in active volcanic systems and their effects
on surface emissions

*Description*

This thesis focuses on understanding the processes that occur inside
of active volcanic systems at level of magma chamber, conduit and
edifice, and how these processes affect surface emissions such as
fumaroles, gas plumes and thermal emissions. To carry out this
research, a combination of geophysical and geochemical methodologies
will be applied.

*Title*

Bayesian inference in the evaluation of hazards for northern Chile volcanoes

*Description*

The variety of physical factors that control volcanic activity, and
the boundary conditions of variables that govern these processes, are
not well known. Deterministic approaches to assessing volcanic
hazards, whilst helpful, lack consideration of uncertainties for
processes which appear to exhibit somewhat random behavior. To avoid
the bias that expert criteria could have, this work intends to model
volcanic hazards from a Bayesian perspective, which takes into account
that the process is stochastic and that in most cases a lack of
information makes the range of parameter values poorly known.

Theoretically, Bayesian inference provides a better evaluation than a
deterministic one when the a priori information of the phenomenon is
not completely covered by a mathematical model in which all of its
variables and boundary conditions are fully represented. This thesis
topic therefore seeks to implement this methodology in the evaluation
of volcanic hazards at northern Chile volcanoes. It will subsequently
compare Bayesian inference with deterministic studies, to identify
which provides better performance in the absence of certain monitoring
information.
