Izu-Bonin-Mariana boninites - natural laboratory to study mantle melting and the evolution of magma plumbing systems during early stages of subductionâ?? A PhD position in experimental petrology/geochemistry is open at the Institute of Mineralogy, Leibniz University of Hannover. The research project consists of (1) complementary investigations of natural core samples recovered during IODP drilling project 352 (Izu Bonin Mariana Fore Arc) and (2) an extensive work in high-pressure high-temperature laboratory by conducting melting and crystallization experiments. The results of this complementary geochemical and experimental approach will provide crucial quantitative information (P,T, volatiles) to model the reorganization of the oceanic lithosphere during initiation of subduction. The experimental expertise at the Institute for Mineralogy with high pressure â?? high temperature internally heated pressure vessel technique will be combined with extensive analytical work (e.g. microprobe, infrared spectroscopy, Laser ablation ICP-MS). We are looking for a person with a strong commitment to research and new experience in the laboratory. Required qualifications: - MSc Degree in Earth Sciences - Strong background in igneous petrology and geochemistry - Preliminary experience in EPMA and LA-ICP-MS - Experience in high-pressure-temperature experiments (Piston cylinder and/or IHPV) is desired - Very good skills in written and spoken English - Team player and good communication skills The position is funded for 3 years. The salary will be typical for German-funded PhD candidates (i.e. 75% of grade E13 TV-L).
