On behalf of the Cities and Volcanoes 11 Local Organizing Committee, the
IAVCEI Cities and Volcanoes commission would like to draw your attention to
4 late-breaking special sessions for COV11:



   1. Special session on recent eruptions : hazards, impacts, and
   consequences
   2. Special session on recent eruptions : crisis management
   3. Special session on covid-19 and volcanoes : lessons and adaptation
   4. Special session on lessons from social sciences and related
   disciplines



We provide details on each special session below, and encourage you to
submit an abstract.



We remind you that you may submit up to 3 abstracts as first author, and
that the *abstract submission deadline is February 13, 2022*. February 13
is also the deadline for uploading modified abstracts if you have indicated
to the conference organizers that you wish to do so. *Note that everyone
who submitted an abstract in early 2019 was sent an email last month asking
whether you wish to keep, modify, or withdraw your abstract, please check
your spam folder if you did not receive it.*



COV11 will be held June 12-17 2022 as a hybrid physical/virtual conference.
Special session on recent eruptions : hazards, impacts, and consequences

*Description: *There have been a number of impactful eruptions since early
2020, including Fagradalsfjall (Iceland), La Soufrière (St Vincent),
Nyiragongo (Democratic Republic of Congo), La Palma (Spain), and others.
This session is dedicated to providing an overview and preliminary results
of recent eruptions , with a focus on hazards, impacts, and consequences.
Special session on recent eruptions : crisis management

*Convenors: **Stefano Branca* (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e
Vulcanologia, Osservatorio Etneo), *Angela Doherty* (Auckland Emergency
Management), *Stacey Edwards* (Seismic Research Center, The University of
the West Indies), *Michelle Forbes* (National Emergency Management
Organisation of St. Vincent & the Grenadines), *Erouscilla Joseph* (Seismic
Research Center, The University of the West Indies)



*Description: *There have been a number of impactful eruptions since early
2020, including Fagradalsfjall (Iceland), La Soufrière (St Vincent),
Nyiragongo (Democratic Republic of Congo), La Palma (Spain), and others.
This session is dedicated on the crisis management of these eruptions,
including resident and tourist considerations, communications, crisis
management in the time of covid-19, and interagency cooperation.
Special session on covid-19 and volcanoes : lessons and adaptation

*Convenors:* *Jorge Romero Moyano* (University of Manchester), *Carol
Stewart* (Massey University)



*Description: *Since late 2019, the severe acute respiratory syndrome
coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; â??covid-19â??) had resulted in a severe global
disruption, affecting all parts of the world and impacting nearly every
aspect of life. This session is focused on both lessons learned from
covid-19 response strategies that can be applied to volcanology, and how
volcanic eruption pre-crisis planning and response, and volcanology more
broadly has adapted in the time of covid-19. We particularly welcome
contributions that focus on communication, crisis management, and
interagency cooperation.
Special session on lessons from social sciences and related disciplines

*Convenors: **Jenni Barclay* (University of East Anglia), and to be
confirmed



*Description: *This broad special session welcomes contributions that
brings together and demonstrates the value of social sciences and related
disciplines to volcanology (e.g. anthropology, economics, geography,
political science, communication, psychology and sociology). We welcome
contributions that are able to share lessons and learnings from research in
these disciplines.
