The IPGP is a component institution of the new University of Paris. The IPGP hosts and is cotutelle (with CNRS, University of Paris, IGN and University of Reunion) of the UMR 7154 IPGP which gathers all research activities. The IPGP hosts and is co-supervisor (with the CNRS) of the UMS 3454 IPGP which gathers all the observation activities. In addition, the IPGP is a space laboratory recognized by CNES, ESA and NASA. Founded in 1921 to observe, monitor and study the Earth's magnetic field, the IPGP has gradually expanded its research and observational missions. It brings together more than 500 staff: researchers recruited from all over the world, engineers, technicians, administrative staff and post-doctoral and doctoral students from all countries sharing the same passion for the Earth, planetary and environmental sciences. Numerous cooperation agreements have been set up with prestigious foreign institutions, allowing permanent scientific exchanges throughout the world. As a world-renowned geosciences research organization, the IPGP studies the Earth and planets from the core to the most superficial fluid envelopes, through observation, experimentation and modeling. Particular attention is paid to long-term observations which are essential for the study of natural systems. The IPGP is in charge of accredited observational services in volcanology, seismology, magnetism, gravimetry and erosion through its permanent observatories on the islands of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Reunion and in Chambon-la-Forêt (France). In addition, the IPGP equips and maintains, in partnership with the Institut de Physique du Globe de Strasbourg, two global geophysical networks that monitor magnetic field variations (INTERMAGNET network) and global seismic activity (GEOSCOPE network). The IPGP hosts powerful computational, experimental and analytical facilities of the latest generation and benefits from a first-class technical support. Its flexible structure facilitates interactions between the 17 research teams working together on the institute's four main themes: Earth and planetary interiors, natural hazards, Earth system and origins. Since its integration into the University of Paris, the IPGP has been responsible for all teaching in Earth, environmental and planetary sciences at the University of Paris, from the Bachelor's to the Master's level (400 students). The IPGP shares the doctoral school STEP-UP with Université de Paris, Sorbonne Université and Ã?cole normale supérieure (110 PhD students in thesis at the IPGP, 45% of which are foreign). All teaching activities of the IPGP are grouped in the department of training and doctoral studies. The IPGP Data Center manages and distributes to the community the data acquired in the different observatories. The IPGP is recruiting a director for the OVSG to take over from the current director (Mr Roberto Moretti) in August 2022. The recruitment is planned for the beginning of 2022 to allow for familiarization with the functioning and missions of the OVSG, and to make an effective transition with the current director. The OVSG is financed by recurrent credits of the IPGP (Ministry of Higher Education and Research MESR and IPGPâ??s own funds), the National Institute of Sciences of the Universe (INSU-CNRS) and the Departmental Council of Guadeloupe. The Ministry of Ecological Transition (MTE) and European Funds (Interreg or Contracts of Convergence and Transformation) finance more specific and occasional projects which have in particular allowed the renovation of geophysical networks of volcanological and seismological observatories of Martinique and Guadeloupe at the scale of the Lesser Antilles in the early 2010s in partnership with the Seismic Research Center (SRC) of Trinidad and Tobago. Thus, under the auspices of UNESCO and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the OVSG is actively involved in the early warning alert of the tsunami warning system in the Caribbean. The OVSG team is composed of 12 persons (10 permanent) including 2 researchers, 5 engineers (3 in instrumentation, 1 in computer science and 1 in geochemical analysis), 2 assistant engineers, 1 technician and 2 administrative assistants to which are added the support of 4 CNAPs based in Paris but carrying out their service tasks for the OVSG and regular missions to the OVSG, about twenty researchers and engineers of the IPGP with wider skills in geophysics, geochemistry, and geology, applied to volcanism and regional seismo-tectonics The OVSG also hosts the Observatoire de l'Erosion aux Antilles OBSERA for which some members of the OVSG team provide a share of their time. Missions The director of the OVSG leads and directs the scientific and technical team of the observatory which maintains and reinforces the observation and monitoring networks in connection with the direction of the Paris observatories and in adequacy with the policy defined by the National Service of Volcanological Observation of the INSU (SNOV). The director is also a privileged interlocutor: i) with local authorities (prefecture and zone headquarters) to provide expertise on earthquake activities in the West Indies, ii) with decentralized government services (DEAL, DRRT ...) to submit and manage scientific projects related to a better understanding of hazards and iii) with the Departmental Council of Guadeloupe which participates financially in the operation of the observatory through a Memorandum of Understanding. The director organizes an annual liaison review committee with all these local actors, the management of INSU and IPGP to give them a financial, technical and scientific report. Finally, he/she is in charge of encouraging scientific exchanges with the Caribbean partners and is a potential candidate to carry-out the role of the national contact point for the Caribbean tsunami warning system. *Essential tasks and activities* - Observation and analysis of the volcanic activity of La Soufrière de Guadeloupe through the recording of time series of geophysical and geochemical data and the acquisition of geological and geochemical data. Monthly samples of fumarole gases and effluents from hydrothermal springs are taken in the field and analyzed at the observatory laboratory. - Drafting and publication of the monthly report on volcanic and seismic activity as well as the annual report on volcanic and seismic activity, distributed to the authorities, the media and the public on the internet and social networks - Observation and analysis of regional seismicity (Guadeloupe and its nearby islands, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthelemy) linked to the tectonic activity of the Lesser Antilles arc through the continuous recording of seismicity and associated deformations. This work allows to warn the authorities of the characteristics of an earthquake felt and of the aftershocks which can be associated to it and to establish on long durations the spatio-temporal characteristics of the regional and local seismicity to contribute to the understanding of the tectonic processes in the region and to the quantification of the seismic hazard, which has implications in terms of zonation of the seismic risk This activity results in the production of a seismological catalog distributed within the framework of the Antilles Seismological Data Center. Exceptional information releases are issued to the authorities, the media and the public as soon as possible after the occurrence of a felt earthquake. - Contribution to the preventive information and to the divulgation of knowledge in the fields of volcanic risk and seismic risk, as well as to the training in volcanology, geology, geophysics and geochemistry. - Response to local and national media in case of volcanic or seismic activities - Development and participation in basic and applied research in geophysics, geochemistry, and geology related to volcanism, seismology, and regional tectonics, including regional cooperation. The recruited candidate will have to carry out a high level research in connection with the researchers of the observatories and the IPGP, with the French and international community, in particular in the Lesser Antilles region (University of the West Indies - UA; the Seismic Research Centre - SRC based in Trinidad and Tobago; the Montserrat Volcanological Observatory - MVO; the Bureau des Mines et de l'Energie - BME in Haiti; the Bureau de Recherche Géologique et Minière - BRGM, the Institute of Research for Development -IRD, etc). - Local management of projects with European funding (ERDF/Interreg), including participation in the PREST project led by OVSM/IPGP. - Manage and lead a team with multidisciplinary skills. *Working environment and context:* The responsibilities of the Director of the OVSG imply the necessity to face crisis situations (felt earthquakes and potential associated tsunamis, volcanic eruption, landslides, fumarole gas emissions) potentially complex and outside the regular schedule. The observatory's personnel are therefore on call to communicate in case of felt earthquakes or in times of crisis. The director also participates in the deployment and maintenance of field instruments, and is available for missions in the Caribbean region.
