PhD Position in Volcano Geodynamics at Penn State

We are seeking a Ph.D. student to participate on a project in the Tectonics
and Volcanology Lab at Penn State and the Gregg Lab at the University of
Illinois to investigate deforming magmatic systems in the Galapagos
Islands, Ecuador. The goal of this work is to use statistical data
assimilation to link geodynamic magma chamber models with geophysical
observations including GPS-GNSS, InSAR, gravity, and seismicity to assess
the stress evolution and eruption potential of Galapagos volcanoes
exhibiting unrest. Objectives also include geophysical fieldwork in the
Galapagos and the implementation of finite element modeling approaches on
scalable, high-performance computing platforms.

This project is funded by a 3-year National Science Foundation â?? Natural
Environment Research Council Award in collaboration with the University of
Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Instituto
Geofisico - Escuela Politechnic Nacional (IG-EPN), Ecuador. The Graduate
Research Assistantship in the Dept. of Geosciences at Penn State includes a
$27,000 annual stipend, full tuition remission, and health insurance. The
Graduate Researcher will be advised by Dr. Peter LaFemina and work in close
collaboration with Dr. Trish Gregg (University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign) and colleagues at University of Edinburgh and IG-EPN.
Funding also includes support for students to travel to Ecuador and the
Galapagos to perform fieldwork and collaboration, and to national
scientific meetings. The project will commence Fall 2021 with a projected
graduate student start date of Spring/Summer 2022.

Please contact Dr. Peter LaFemina for more information regarding the
project (pcl11@xxxxxxx).
