*Postdoctoral Research Position *

*JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:*

Dr. Madison Myers, Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences at Montana State
University, is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to investigate the behavior
of lithium in ascending rhyolitic magmas. This project is in collaboration
with Dr. Celestine Mercer at the USGS Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry
Science Center in Denver.

The successful candidate will work closely with both the USGS and Montana
State University to generate a first order understanding of lithium
mobility and partitioning (and its relation to other elements) during magma
ascent, eruption, and/or post-eruptive processes (e.g., devitrification,
weathering), through combination of mineral and melt geochemistry, with the
option of applying experimental petrology.

Funding is available for 12 months ($54,000 a year) with the potential for
extension upon submission of grant applications.

A Ph.D. in volcanology/geochemistry or a related field is required by the
date of hire. Preference will be placed on applicants familiar with glass
and mineral sample preparation, operating a multicollector-LA-ICP-MS,
micro-FTIR system, and/or rapid-quench cold-seal high temperature/pressure
instrument, and Li isotope geochemistry.

Applicants should include a 1-page research proposal addressing how they
would approach this project, a cover letter, CV, and contact information
for three references, emailed to madison.myers@xxxxxxxxxxx. Review of
applications will begin on October 8th, 2021, but continue until the
position is filled. The successful candidate can start on or after
December 1st, 2021.

Both PIs on the project are passionate about mentorship and happy to work
with the successful candidate to create a post-doctoral experience that
allows for acquisition of preferred skillsets geared toward their career
trajectory (e.g., instrument technician, federal employment, teaching
experience, etc.). In addition, the Montana State University Department of
Earth Science has made a commitment to promote Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion in order to create a department that is safe and welcoming for
all students and faculty.
