Dear All,

A fully funded (salary and research) PhD position supported by the Istituto
Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is available at the Department
of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Catania (Italy).

*Project title*
Big Data and Visualization Analytic Tools

*Project Description*
Most volcano observatories are nowadays heavily reliant on satellite remote
sensing data from a variety of sensors to provide time-critical hazard
information. Specifically, Earth observation systems are generating massive
volumes of disparate, dynamic, and geographically distributed geospatial
data with increasingly finer spatiotemporal resolutions. The purpose of
this project is to develop new computer science tools and management
strategies for Geospatial Big Data (GeoBD) analysis to ensure a high level
of data quality and accessibility for intelligent decision support before
and during volcanic emergencies with the ultimate goal to reduce associated
risks and economic losses. To this aim, a new framework for processing
parallelizable problems across large heterogeneous datasets will be
designed and complemented by data
visualization tools. The project will focus on volcanic eruptions that
present high-risk to Italian socio-economic activities across
geographically localized, but highly populated and touristic, areas. We
foresee application to two volcanoes: Mount Etna and Stromboli Island.

*Requirements*
The applicant should have a master degree in Computer Science, Mathematics,
Physics, Engineering, Geophysics or other related fields (it is enough if
you have handed in your thesis by the position start time), and have an
interest in Big Data and Data Visualization. Machine Learning skills are
useful; experience in Statistical Analysis is an advantage. Candidates are
expected to be able to communicate easily in oral and written English, work
independently and in an international team of researchers with different
disciplinary backgrounds.

*Studentships details*
The student will be funded for 3 years, including:
- Annual stipend (â?¬15,343 pa x 3 years)
- Costs for training and conference attendance

*Application procedure*
The application form is web based and must be completed electronically
through the University of Catania online application system available at:

When applying, please ensure the following documents are attached:
1. Curriculum vitae et studiorum / Resume
2. Self-certification of successful completion of the degree course;
3. Research project;
4. List of publications with relative abstracts, if any.

All applications will be answered when a decision has been made.

*Timeframe*
The closing date for the application is 29 July 2021 at 16:00 Italian time.

*Start date *
The start date is 1 November 2021.
