*Announcing recipients of the 2021 Kleinman Grants for Volcano Research *

The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington congratulates nine
students awarded Kleinman Grants for Volcano Research this year. Jack
Kleinman was a USGS employee at the David A. Johnston Cascades Volcano
Observatory who died in a kayaking accident in 1994. By supporting
field-oriented research projects in volcanology, the Kleinman Grants
memorialize Jackâ??s exuberance for fieldwork, volcanoes, and the natural
world. During the past 26 years, the program has helped more than 100
aspiring volcanologists who seek to learn more about volcanoes, how they
work, and how to mitigate the associated hazards. One of the goals of the
fund is to strengthen partnerships between volcanology students and
scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey through projects of mutual
interest. This yearâ??s awardees are (alphabetically):

*Abigail Nalesnik*, Masterâ??s student at the University of Delaware
(advisers Kendra Lynn and Jessica Warren) working on â??A physical and
geochemical investigation of glasses from the explosive Kulanaokuaiki
Tephra (400-1000 CE) of KiÌ?lauea Volcano, Hawaiâ??i.â??

*Charles (Chuck) Lewis*, PhD student at Oregon State University (adviser
Shan de Silva) working on â??Fayalite in Newberry Volcano rhyolitic magmas:
Implications for pre-eruptive storage.â??

*Claire Ruggles*, PhD student at the University of Wisconsinâ??Madison
(adviser Basil Tikoff) working on â??Direct and indirect observations of
magma chambers in continental magmatic arc settings [Duncan Hill pluton in
the North Cascades and Laguna del Maule].â??

*Jacqueline Giblin*, PhD student at Arizona State University (advisers
Amanda Clarke and Kip Hodges) working on â??Constraining the plumbing system
dynamics of the most recent volcanic eruption [El Cajete] from Valles
Caldera, New Mexico.â??

*Jessica (Jessie) Bersson*, PhD student at Arizona State University
(advisers Christy Till and Amanda Clarke) working on â??Investigating
secondary explosion pits on the Banco Bonito rhyolite flow, New Mexico.â??

*Justin Crevier*, undergraduate student at Boise State University (adviser
Brittany Brand) working on â??Pre-Plinian Perplexity: Constraining the
Transition from the Blast to Plinian phases of the 18 May 1980 Mount St
Helens Eruption.â??

*Katherine Hewitt*, PhD student at UC Davis (adviser Kari Cooper) working
on â??Resolving ambiguous formation relationships of the Central Plateau
Member, Yellowstone Plateau Volcanic Field with field and geochemical
tools.â??

*Margaret (Maggie) Holahan*, Masterâ??s student at Boise State University
(adviser Jeffrey Johnson) working on â??Monitoring Steamboat Geyser
[Yellowstone] using remote infrasound sensing.â??

*Rose Gallo*, PhD student at the University of Hawai'i at MÄ?noa (adviser
Thomas Shea) working on â??Sampling the ca. 1790 CE lavas of KiÌ?laueaâ??s Lower
East Rift Zone for geochemical analysis and carbon-14 dating.â??

Congratulations to this yearâ??s awardees, and we wish them well on their
research projects in the upcoming field season.
