Jack Kleinman was a USGS employee at the David A. Johnston Cascades Volcano Observatory who died in a kayaking accident in 1994. By supporting field-oriented research projects in volcanology, the Kleinman Grants memorialize Jackâ??s exuberance for fieldwork, volcanoes, and the natural world. During the past 26 years, the program has helped more than 100 aspiring volcanologists who seek to learn more about volcanoes, how they work, and how to mitigate the associated hazards. One of the goals of the fund is to strengthen partnerships between volcanology students and scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey through projects of mutual interest.
