From: Alexander Garcia <alexander.garcia@xxxxxxx>

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to advertise an open postdoctoral research grant for 1
position in research at the National Institute of Geophysics and
Volcanology (INGV), sections of Bologna and Catania, Italy, in the frame
of the Italian project â??PIANETA DINAMICO - PANACEA (Probabilistic
AssessmeNt of volCano-related multi-hazard and multi-risk at Mount EtnA).

*The title of the research:*
"Characterization and simulation of volcanic processes and statistical data
analysis"

*About the project:*
The PANACEA project aims to develop new capabilities for volcanic and
seismic disaster management at Mount Etna, Italy, based on multi-hazard and
multi-risk analyses. PANACEA focuses on the integration of historical
seismic, volcanological field-based and remote sensing data, accurate
physics-based models, and advanced probabilistic approaches, which is the
key to improve our ability to assess volcanic multi-hazards and identify
at-risk zones. To this aim, the project will address unresolved challenging
issues for: (i) improving knowledge of the long-term seismic and eruptive
history of Etna volcano; (ii) numerical modelling and simulation of complex
geophysical flows including lava, pyroclastic flows and tephra, exploiting
high-performance parallel computing techniques, both on CPU and GPU; (iii)
probabilistic mapping of single volcano-related hazards; (iv) developing a
flexible probabilistic framework, able to produce both (v) long-term and
short-term multi-hazard maps and the quantification of cascading effects
scenarios that will be also directly usable for (vi) multi-risk assessment.

*About the position:*
We are looking for candidates interested in physical and stochastic
modelling applied to volcanic hazard assessment. The expected activities
can be summarized as follows:

- To contribute in the implementation of probabilistic hazard assessment at
Etna volcano (Italy), in particular by modelling volcanic ash dispersion
and fallout;
- Stochastic analysis using eruption catalogues (considering spatial and
temporal distribution of events) for determining event rates in the long
term;
- Analysis of data from different remote sensing instruments for a better
constraint of explosive activity at Etna.
Deadline for application: 8 June 2021
Expected start: September 2021

*Qualifications:*
-University degree (master level, course of study not less than four years)
in Earth sciences, physics,
mathematics, engineering, or an equivalent degree to be evaluated during
the admission procedure;
- Doctorate (PhD) in a scientific field closely related to the proposed
research;
- Good programming skills;
- Knowledge of statistical data analysis techniques;
- Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

*Funding:*
The grant has a duration of *16 months*. Subject to progress verification
and funding availability, it may possibly be renewed. The research
activities will be carried on at the INGV offices in Bologna and/or Catania
(Italy).

*Salary*: the gross *annual* remuneration is set at *29696* Euros
(twenty-nine thousand, six hundred ninety six Euros).
