My research uses geological fluid mechanics to address problems in volcanology, flow through porous materials, and other earth surface processes. Laboratory experiments and field observations are key components of this work. Past and current projects focus on the mechanics of pyroclastic density currents and submarine volcanic eruptions. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the Vanderbilt EES Department emphasizes collaboration between students and faculty and values diversity and inclusion. Areas of research emphasis in the department include magmatic and volcanic processes, transport phenomena, paleoecology and paleoclimatology, and geochemical processes.
