1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 From: Aaron Pietruszka <apietrus@xxxxxxxxxx> *MS or PhD Position in Volcano Chemistry at the University of Hawai**â??**i* *Mantle controls on magmatic-volcanic cycles at basaltic volcanoes: An isotopic probe of the Puâ??u â??Oâ??o, Halemaâ??umaâ??u, and 2018 Leilani eruptions of Kilauea Volcano* The Department of Earth Sciences (ES) at the University of Hawaiâ??i (UH-Manoa in Honolulu) is searching for a highly qualified student to work as a Graduate Assistant on a NSF-funded research project to understand the mantle controls on magmatic-volcanic cycles at basaltic volcanoes. As part of their MS or PhD research, the successful candidate will use mass spectrometry to measure the Pb, Sr, and Nd isotope ratios of lava samples from the spectacular 2018 Leilani rift eruption of Kilauea Volcano. The results will be used to test the hypothesis that the 2018 eruption was actively driven by the delivery of at least one large mantle-derived magma batch to a volcanic edifice that already held an unusually large amount of stored magma. The research will use the exceptional suite of lava samples collected molten in real time during the 2018 eruption by the staff of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Geochemical modeling of the data will be required. Applications will be considered to either the MS or PhD program in the ES Department at UH-Manoa. The successful candidate will have a strong background, and preferably, research experience in igneous petrology and/or geochemistry, and a willingness to work in a cleanroom chemistry environment. Attention to detail is a critical skill for the successful candidate. Coursework beyond first-year chemistry and experience with scientific programming are preferred. The Graduate Assistant will pursue their MS or PhD degree as part of the ES Department in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology (SOEST) at UH-Manoa (http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/index.html), and will be advised by Dr. Aaron Pietruszka. Additional opportunities may include the mentoring of undergraduate students, working as a Teaching Assistant (TA) to gain professional teaching experience, and field trips to Hawaiian volcanoes.
