*MS or PhD Position in Volcano Chemistry at the University of Hawai**â??**i*

*Mantle controls on magmatic-volcanic cycles at basaltic volcanoes: An
isotopic probe of the Puâ??u â??Oâ??o, Halemaâ??umaâ??u, and 2018 Leilani eruptions
of Kilauea Volcano*

The Department of Earth Sciences (ES) at the University of Hawaiâ??i
(UH-Manoa in Honolulu) is searching for a highly qualified student to work
as a Graduate Assistant on a NSF-funded research project to understand the
mantle controls on magmatic-volcanic cycles at basaltic volcanoes. As part
of their MS or PhD research, the successful candidate will use mass
spectrometry to measure the Pb, Sr, and Nd isotope ratios of lava samples
from the spectacular 2018 Leilani rift eruption of Kilauea Volcano. The
results will be used to test the hypothesis that the 2018 eruption was actively
driven by the delivery of at least one large mantle-derived magma batch to
a volcanic edifice that already held an unusually large amount of stored
magma. The research will use the exceptional suite of lava samples
collected molten in real time during the 2018 eruption by the staff of the
USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Geochemical modeling of the data will be
required.

Applications will be considered to either the MS or PhD program in the ES
Department at UH-Manoa. The successful candidate will have a strong
background, and preferably, research experience in igneous petrology and/or
geochemistry, and a willingness to work in a cleanroom chemistry
environment. Attention to detail is a critical skill for the successful
candidate. Coursework beyond first-year chemistry and experience with
scientific programming are preferred.

The Graduate Assistant will pursue their MS or PhD degree as part of the ES
Department in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology (SOEST)
at UH-Manoa (http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/index.html), and will be
advised by Dr. Aaron Pietruszka. Additional opportunities may include the
mentoring of undergraduate students, working as a Teaching Assistant (TA)
to gain professional teaching experience, and field trips to Hawaiian
volcanoes.

The deadline to apply is August 15, 2020 and the expected starting date is
Spring Semester in January 2021. Application instructions are provided on
the website of the ES Department (
http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/admissions/gg_admissions_graduate.html).
Potential
applicants are encouraged to contact Aaron Pietruszka (apietrus@xxxxxxxxxx)
to learn more about the project and the graduate program at UH-Manoa. The
ES Department at UH-Manoa is actively seeking to increase the diversity of
its student population. Students from underrepresented groups are strongly
encouraged to apply for this position.
