Seeking Ph.D. Candidate for Project: Sulfur Cycling at Subduction Zones

Ph.D. candidate (Graduate Research Assistant) sought to work under the
direction of Professor Terry Plank (Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory,
Columbia University) to further our understanding of the sulfur cycle at
subduction zones. Sulfur is a key element driving the climatic effects
of arc volcanism, the economic potential of arc magmas, and the
oxidation state of the Earth, and yet the inputs, processing, and
recycling of S throughout the subduction system are still poorly
constrained. The GRA will focus on making measurements of the sulfur
contents and isotopic composition of marine sediments entering target
subduction zones using XRF core scanning and mass spectrometry. This
project is supported by an NSF/NERC-funded grant, â??Sulfur Cycling at
Subduction Zonesâ??, with the principal aim of using sulfur isotopes as
tracers of recycled sediment and arc volcano fluxes. This project
involves close collaborations with the University of Oxford (led by
Tamsin Mather) and the University of Palermo, Italy (led by Alessandro
Aiuppa) and the Edinburgh Ion Microprobe Facility in the UK amongst
others. Preferred candidates will have already completed a Masters
degree or have carried out significant undergraduate research. Preferred
qualifications include experience in the study of marine sediments and
diagenetic reactions, stable isotopes, geochemical cycles, mass
spectrometry and/or XRF core scanning. For further details please
contact Terry Plank, tplank@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. US and International
applicants welcome.
