For AGU participants:

If you work on hydrovolcanic eruptions, hydrothermal systems, peperites,
hyaloclastites, lava deltas, or lahars, please contribute to AGU Session
V024 entitled, â??Hydrovolcanic Eruptions and Volcanic Processes Involving
External Waterâ?? (July 31st abstract deadline). Contributions are
encouraged from all related fields, including: physical volcanology,
planetary science, and geomorphology.

Thanks,

Erin Fitch (with James White, Alison Graettinger, and Nicole Lautze)

Hydrovolcanic Eruptions and Volcanic Processes Involving External Water
(V024)

Almost 30% of eruptions are classified as hydrovolcanic, where magma
interacts explosively with external water, resulting in a more intense
eruption. However, further study of the dynamics and products of
magma-water interactions is needed, and in addition we need an
understanding of the availability of groundwater prior to, during, and
after hydrovolcanic eruptions. Additionally, when external water
interacts with volcanic products, secondary hazards are possible, such
as lava-water mixing, fragmentation, and explosive ejection during ocean
entry or the melting of volcano summit snow or ice, that can result in
lahars or jökulhlaups. Therefore, this multi-disciplinary session
includes work on the dynamics and deposits of (1) hydrovolcanic
eruptions, such as phreatomagmatic, littoral or subaqueous eruptions,
and (2) other volcanic processes involving external water, such as the
development of hydrothermal systems, peperites, hyaloclastites, lava
deltas, and lahars. Contributions are encouraged from all related
fields, including: physical volcanology, planetary science, and
geomorphology.
