*M.Sc. or Ph.D. position in Natural Hazards communications and Citizen
science*

Applications are invited for prospective M.Sc. or Ph.D. students interested
in Natural hazards communications and Citizen science. The Centre for
Natural Hazards Research <http://www.sfu.ca/cnhr/>, Department of Earth
Sciences, at Simon Fraser University <https://www.sfu.ca/> is leading *The
Mountain Risk Knowledge Exchange - Building Risk Management Capacity and
Resilience in Mountain Communities, *an initiative within the Canadian
Mountain Network <http://canadianmountainnetwork.ca/>, that aims to develop
a publicly accessible central data hub for mountain hazard information in
Canada. This community-based resource will harness local knowledge and
build risk management capacity and resilience in mountain communities. An
open access philosophy, in accordance with SFU and provincial/federal Open
Government initiatives, will be at the core of this initiative in order to
ensure the greatest access to this information. Western geotechnical
science perspectives and recognized best practices will be integrated with
indigenous and non-indigenous local knowledge, as well as citizen-science
monitoring initiatives to develop a sustainable, comprehensive and
multifaceted perspective on Canadian mountain hazards.

Citizen science initiatives (e.g., Avalanche Canada
<http://www.avalanche.ca/mountain-information-network>) have proven to be
powerful mechanisms for the collection of high quality information over
large areas and through time while also helping engage the public. This
project aims to leverage the observations of interested citizens (e.g.,
backcountry enthusiasts, local residents, municipalities) in order to
expand both the spatial and temporal coverage of the data portal while
enhancing mountain risk awareness. Therefore, the development of
collaborative relationships between mountain communities and researchers is
critical to ensure this project is effective and of use to the communities
most at risk from natural hazards. The wealth of local knowledge, history
and information exists in these communities will be incorporated where
possible with the full recognition of the different ways of knowing and
learning. As such, regular dialogue with collaborating indigenous and
non-indigenous communities via in person meetings with various community
representatives and members will be an important part of this project.

Importantly, this initiative aims to provide practical guidance to
communities in recognizing mountain hazards, information used to determine
when assistance from natural hazard professionals is advised, and best
practices for risk communication and fostering risk awareness.

The ideal applicant will have a minimum of a Bachelors in the Natural
Sciences or relevant field with strong GIS, social media and science
communications skills. The ability to work with a multidisciplinary and
multicultural team of natural hazards geoscientists, computer scientists,
and community members is important. Previous experience collaborating with
indigenous communities would be extremely beneficial.

Tentative start date is January 1, 2020 and thus applications should be
received at the latest by September 1st, 2019.

Please send applications (with a cover letter, full CV and unofficial
university transcripts) to Drs Glyn Williams-Jones (glynwj@xxxxxx) and
Eilleen van der Flier-Keller (evanderf@xxxxxx).
