The life of a volcanologist is understood by few. A biography written about
Katia and Maurice Krafft in 2000 is out of print but for a few used copies.
With the permission of the Johnston family and input from close friends
comes the biography of David A. Johnston, who died in the May 18, 1980,
eruption of Mount St. Helens. Before David died, he lived; before he was a
scientist, he was a son, a brother, a friend. Vicki McConnell, former State
Geologist of Oregon, who gave her endorsement, remarked that the book was
like building a man and a volcano at the same time. University of Illinois
Press is the publisher; their catalog has the bookâ??s description as well as
full line-up of endorsements (Tom Casadevall, USGS Emeritus; Christine
McEntee of AGU; Barry Voight, Penn State, among others).
