(Session 2D), of the 1st ALVO Conference (1er Congreso ALVO), which will take place in Antofagasta, Chile (November 3-7, 2019). Description of session 2D: Volcanoes emit gases to the atmosphere during periods of activity and also during quiescence. The information about the different species that are emitted is key to understanding the nature of the magma, its ascent to the surface, the potential impacts to health, and the changes that the emissions can cause to the environment and atmospheric chemistry, among others. The emitted gases can be detected by different remote sensing techniques, both ground-based and satellite-based. These techniques include the use of ultraviolet and infrared cameras, UV spectrometers (i.e., mini DOAS, FLYSPEC), and images from different sensors (i.e., OMI, IASI, OMPS, MODIS). Significant advances have occurred in the last decades, which have impacted the ways monitoring is conducted in our region. This session seeks contributions related to volcanic gas monitoring, both using ground-based and satellite-based techniques. It also seeks contributions related to the development of gas monitoring networks in Latin American volcano observatories, and also new techniques or instrumentation developed at our observatories.
