Dear All,

Iâ??d like to advertise a post-doctoral researcher position (fixed term, 40
months) in volcanic plume modelling <http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/20174/> to
join my group at the University of Cambridge.

Research Associate - Numerical modelling of volcanic plume dispersion and
volcanic impacts

http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/20174/

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate to join the
group of Dr Anja Schmidt on a NERC-funded consortium project (V-PLUS) aimed
at improving our understanding of volcanic plume processes and our ability
to forecast the dispersion of volcanic plumes by integrating
remote-sensing, in-situ observations and numerical models. The successful
candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team involving the
Universities of Cambridge, Manchester, Oxford, Cardiff and Leeds as well as
the Met Office. The candidate will run and develop numerical models and
mathematical tools to simulate the dispersion of volcanic plumes, and to
assess their atmospheric and societal impacts. Working in close
collaboration with the Met Office, a major aim is to improve current
operational forecasting capabilities by integrating in-situ measurements,
satellite-based datasets and numerical techniques gathered within the
V-PLUS project. Overall, this is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious
researcher to become a leader in the numerical modelling and impact
assessment of gas-rich and ash-rich volcanic plumes.

The successful candidate will have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in
atmospheric science, meteorology, physics or mathematics. Experience with
numerical techniques as applied to the modelling of atmospheric processes
would be advantageous. Further details can be found in the Further
Particulars.

Informal enquiries about the position can be made to Dr Anja Schmidt (
as2737@xxxxxxxxx).

The Department of Chemistry holds an Athena SWAN silver award for women in
Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine.

The University values diversity and is committed to equality of opportunity.

The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are
eligible to live and work in the UK.

All the best,

Anja
