Fellow Volcano List Members,

I am writing to inform you of a recently deciphered manuscript that
contains the earliest known volcanic hazard map. The map is pictorial and
it documents the eruption of Vulcanello in the Mediterranean, which began
on February 4th, 1444. Also included on the map, are the volcanoes of
Vulcano and Ischia. The information may therefore be useful contemporaneous
scientific reference for those monitoring present day volcanic activity
over the Tyrrhenian Sea. It may also be useful to those interested in
historic human interaction with volcanoes.

The information includes details of the eruption event itself, pyroclastic
clouds, magma flows, formation of lava and pumice, and the creation of a
new island (Vulcanello), which subsequently became fused to Vulcano. The
map also has information concerning safe maritime navigation around the
erupting cone, whilst rescuing survivors.

A paper describing the hazard map is freely available as a preprint from
the linguistics website Lingbuzz. Please feel free to download a copy of
the PDF: https://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/004381

A further paper provides details of the humanitarian rescue elements of the
map: http://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/003808

Please pass this information to other scholars who may find the map useful
for their research.

Kindest regards,

Dr. Gerard E. Cheshire.

University of Bristol.
