*Catalyzing Opportunities for Research in the Earth Sciences (CORES):*

*A Decadal Survey for NSFâ??s Division of Earth Sciences*

*Synopsis*

A 2019 study will provide advice that can be used by the National Science
Foundation (NSF) to set priorities and strategies for investments in Earth
science research, infrastructure, and training over the coming decade. The
study will (1) identify a concise set of high-priority scientific questions
for the next decade, (2) assess infrastructure needed to address these
questions, and (3) determine opportunities for more collaboration with
other NSF divisions and directorates, federal agencies, and domestic and
international partners. The complete statement of task
<http://nas-sites.org/dels/studies/cores/cores-statement-of-task/> is
available on the CORES website <http://nas-sites.org/dels/studies/cores/>.
This study is sponsored by NSF.

*Process*

The study will be carried out by a committee of volunteers with expertise
in a variety of Earth science and related disciplines under the direction
of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The
committee will hold a series of information-gathering meetings throughout
late 2018 and 2019, will gather community input
<https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4717567/CORES-Community-Input> to inform
their study charge, and write a report (to be delivered in early 2020). An
overview of the Academiesâ?? study process can be found here
<http://www.nationalacademies.org/studyprocess/index.html>.

*Getting Involved*
