As a result, community projects with open-access data, samples, and software have seen increasing use among the U.S. National Science Foundation geoscience community. In parallel, recent community reports on volcanology and subduction zone processes (ERUPT <http://dels.nas.edu/Report/Volcanic-Eruptions-Their-Repose-Unrest/24650>, SZ4D <https://www.iris.edu/hq/files/workshops/2016/09/szo_16/sz4d.pdf>, USGS <https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/cir1428>) highlight many challenges and opportunities in volcano science that demand increased community coordination. However, volcano science has seen relatively limited use of the community project mechanism, making this inherently interdisciplinary field particularly well-poised for rapid advance if new initiatives are developed. To address these aims this NSF-supported workshop will gather members of the broad volcanology community to identify the most pressing questions that are best addressed through community projects and explore the merits of different models for community projects. Discussion and synthesis of recommendations for community projects will span strategies for coordinated multidisciplinary observations, effective incorporation of education and training opportunities, and development of community frameworks to foster integrative volcanology research. The workshop will include plenary session presentations to motivate and focus discussions, goal-oriented breakout group discussions, lightning talks, and poster presentations. As the specific agenda becomes available the workshop info website <http://www.unm.edu/~bschmandt/workshop-info.html> will be updated. *Dates:* November 28-29 (full days) and 30 (half-day), 2018 *Location:* DoubleTree Hotel <http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/new-mexico/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-albuquerque-ALBSMDT/index.html>, Downtown Albuquerque, NM *APPLICATION TO PARTICIPATE <https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/K5VRRND>* *Support:* Travel support is available for about 50 U.S. participants.* Applications for travel support are due by September 28th, 2018. *The submission website will be available starting September 4th. Applicants will be notified of their travel support status by October 8th. Travel support will include up to $500 for air & ground transportation and up to 3 nights of accommodations at the hotel hosting the workshop. Willingness to share double rooms is encouraged to maximize the number of supported participants. *Un-supported participants:* *Individuals seeking to participate without travel support must still register by October 15th.* The number of unsupported participants will be capped based on space limitations at the meeting facility. Un-supported participants are eligible for the group rate for hotel rooms ($114 per night including breakfast) and will be charged a $60 registration fee to contribute to facility rental costs and on-site meals during the workshop. Sincerely, The Conveners (Brandon Schmandt, Michelle Coombs, David Fee, Tobias Fischer, Esteban Gazel, Ronni Grapenthin, Einat Lev, Christelle Wauthier) ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI). I posted this initially last week prior to COV10 to give people a chance to chat with us there. Please visit this link for more information on the position, including instructions on how to apply: https://www.opportunities.auckland.ac.nz/psp/ps/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/HRS_HRAM.HRS_CE.GBL?Page=HRS_CE_JOB_DTL&Action=A&JobOpeningId=20092&SiteId=1&PostingSeq=1 The successful candidate will join Jan Lindsay, Mary Anne Thompson and Michael Martin from UoA and Graham Leonard from GNS Science to explore a fit-for-purpose volcanic hazard mapping framework for New Zealand. The aim of this project is to combine research and scholarship on map design and cartography with lessons from both New Zealand and international volcanic hazard mapping experiences to develop, test and implement an operational framework for volcanic hazard map development in New Zealand to improve hazard communication before, during and after a crisis. The candidate will assist our current efforts to develop a preliminary multi-agency framework for volcanic hazard map development and then apply the framework to a case study volcano in New Zealand. The preliminary framework will be evaluated through qualitative methods (e.g., interviews or focus groups with key stakeholders), and the case study results will be tested (for example, through a table-top exercise or empirical research study), to determine whether the resultant map and associated products are fit for purpose and meet their communication and messaging goals. The research will feed into the development of an operational framework for volcanic hazard map development in New Zealand, a flexible workflow that can be implemented across all New Zealand volcanoes for all types of hazard maps. The project will be fully integrated with hazard mapping research and hazard map development at GNS Science. GNS Science runs the GeoNet monitoring programme, which includes volcano monitoring, setting of volcanic alert levels and delivery of alert bulletins that often include maps during eruptions. The area of hazard communication is rapidly gaining attention as an important and priority area of future research worldwide. The successful candidate will join our New Zealand based team to work on the project described above as well as other transdisciplinary research projects in the growing field of hazard and risk communication. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Geography, GIS, or related field (e.g. Volcanology), and a track record of research as demonstrated by scholarly publications. They will have experience in qualitative and quantitative social science research methods; experience in cartography and/or communications research and an openness to engage with stakeholders. An understanding of volcanic processes and hazards will be very beneficial. For more information please contact Jan Lindsay (j.lindsay@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx) Best wishes, Jan ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI).
