I posted this initially last week prior to COV10 to give people a chance to chat with us there. *Please visit this link for more information on the position, including instructions on how to apply*: https://www.opportunities.auckland.ac.nz/psp/ps/EMPLOYEE/HRM S/c/HRS_HRAM.HRS_CE.GBL?Page=HRS_CE_JOB_DTL&Action=A&JobOpen ingId=20092&SiteId=1&PostingSeq=1 The successful candidate will join Jan Lindsay, Mary Anne Thompson and Michael Martin from UoA and Graham Leonard from GNS Science to *explore a fit-for-purpose volcanic hazard mapping framework for New Zealand.* The aim of this project is to combine research and scholarship on map design and cartography with lessons from both New Zealand and international volcanic hazard mapping experiences to develop, test and implement an operational framework for volcanic hazard map development in New Zealand to improve hazard communication before, during and after a crisis. The candidate will assist our current efforts to develop a preliminary multi-agency framework for volcanic hazard map development and then apply the framework to a case study volcano in New Zealand. The preliminary framework will be evaluated through qualitative methods (e.g., interviews or focus groups with key stakeholders), and the case study results will be tested (for example, through a table-top exercise or empirical research study), to determine whether the resultant map and associated products are fit for purpose and meet their communication and messaging goals. The research will feed into the development of an *operational framework for volcanic hazard map development in New Zealand, *a flexible workflow that can be implemented across all New Zealand volcanoes for all types of hazard maps. The project will be fully integrated with hazard mapping research and hazard map development at GNS Science. GNS Science runs the GeoNet monitoring programme, which includes volcano monitoring, setting of volcanic alert levels and delivery of alert bulletins that often include maps during eruptions. The area of hazard communication is rapidly gaining attention as an important and priority area of future research worldwide. The successful candidate will join our New Zealand based team to work on the project described above as well as other transdisciplinary research projects in the growing field of hazard and risk communication. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Geography, GIS, or related field (e.g. Volcanology), and a track record of research as demonstrated by scholarly publications. They will have experience in qualitative and quantitative social science research methods; experience in cartography and/or communications research and an openness to engage with stakeholders. An understanding of volcanic processes and hazards will be very beneficial. It shows how volcano crises are managed in practice, and helps to establish best practices. Consequently, the book brings together over 100 authors from all over the globe who work with volcanoes, ranging from observatory volcanologists, disaster practitioners and government officials to NGO-based and government practitioners to address three key aspects of volcanic crises. First, the book explores the unique nature of volcanic hazards, which makes them a particularly challenging threat to forecast and manage, due in part to their varying spatial and temporal characteristics. Second, it presents lessons learned on how to best manage volcanic events based on a number of crises that have shaped our understanding of volcanic hazards and crises management. Third, it discusses the diverse and wide-ranging aspects of communication involved in crises, which merge old practices and new technologies to accommodate an increasingly challenging and globalised world. The information and insights presented here are essential to tapping established knowledge, moving towards more robust volcanic crises management, and understanding how the volcanic world is perceived from a range of standpoints and contexts around the globe. Many thanks and we hope you are enjoying the free downloads and eBook of the version! Looking forward to seeing you on the 20th. The goal of this work is to use statistical data assimilation to link geodynamic magma chamber models with geophysical observations including GPS, InSAR, and seismicity to assess the stress evolution and eruption potential of Alaskan volcanoes exhibiting unrest. Objectives also include the implementation of finite element modeling approaches on scalable, high-performance computing platforms at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications housed on the University of Illinois campus. This project is part of a broader effort to develop an operational methodology for eruption forecasting using geophysical observations. This project is funded by a 5-year National Science Foundation CAREER Award through NSF Geophysics, EarthScope, and PREEVENTS, and is in collaboration with colleagues at the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), Michigan State University, and Southern Methodist University. Graduate Research Assistantship funding in the Dept. of Geology at the University of Illinois includes a $25,000 annual stipend, full tuition remission, health insurance, and 4 weeks of time off per year. Funding also includes support for students to travel to Anchorage, Alaska to collaborate with colleagues at AVO. The project will commence September 2018 with a projected graduate student start date of Summer 2019.
