Dear colleagues,

We are excited to announce that we have have an opening for an

Interim Professorship of (Volcano) Seismology

(Salary class W2; LBesG)

The appointment is part of a Gutenberg Research Council Fellowship that focusses on better understanding magmatic systems using a combination of thermomechanical numerical models and observations. The successful candidate is expected to help setup a seismic monitoring campaign on an active volcano (likely in Argentina), and interpret the data using various seismic methods.

He/she is expected to collaborate with existing research groups at the Institute of Geosciences, particularly in volcanology, computational geodynamics and with a new research team being created as part of the ERC Consolidator Grant MAGMA, focusing on understanding the dynamics of magmatic arcs from the mantle to the upper crust.  For this purpose, the candidate will have access to the outstanding high-performance computing facilities at JGU. Moreover, exciting opportunities exist to combine the expertise in computational geoscience with seismic methods to directly constrain the physics of magmatic systems from observations.

We expect the candidate to have a track record of high-quality and innovative research. He/she is expected to take part in the teaching of the existing geophysics curriculum at the BSc/MSc-level, as required of a W2 professor (HLehrVO, Rheinland-Pfalz).

The initial appointment will be for two years but may be extended to a total of five years (the full duration of the GRC fellowship).

Applicants should submit a single document comprising a cover letter, CV, overview of teaching experience, publication list and a statement outlining your planned research directions.

Applications in electronic form should be sent as a PDF file to Prof. Boris Kaus at kaus@xxxxxxxxxxxx. We start evaluating candidates on July 28, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled. The ideal starting date is Autumn 2018.
