Dear Volcano List members,
For those of you interested in researching historic eruptions, there is a new paper available that translates a Medieval eyewitness report of an eruption on the island of Vulcano in the Tyrrhenian Sea, west of the Italian peninsula in February 1444.
The eruption is documented elsewhere from indirect sources, but the manuscript provides firsthand details of the eruption and the rescue effort mounted by the population of Ischia in the following days. This includes a map and illustrations as well as the accompanying text.
The translation paper can be freely downloaded as a PDF file from the linguistics website LingBuzz: Title: Linguistically Dating and Locating Manuscript MS408: http://ling.auf.net/lin
In addition to the scientific information, the manuscript also provides some insight into Medieval human interaction and understanding of volcanoes in relation to the belief system of the period. This was a blend of Christianity and Pagan-Roman ideas pertaining to the underworld.
