Doctorate Student (PhD) fellowships in studying the physics and/or chemistry of magma reservoirs at ETH Zürich, Switzerland.

The Institute for Geochemistry and Petrology at ETH Zürich invites applications for 2 PhD fellowships in magmatic petrology and volcanology.

We are looking for highly motivated PhD students interested in studying the physics and/or chemistry of magma reservoirs in the Earth’s crust, focusing on volatile element behavior in magmas, as well as the influence of such volatiles on the eruptive styles of volcanoes. The PhD projects, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, will be integrated in the group of Prof. Olivier Bachmann, in collaboration with colleagues in the USA and Italy. The projects will include a combination of fieldwork (mostly in Greece, but potentially in other active volcanic areas as well), geochemical analyses of rock, mineral, melt and gas samples with data interpretation, experimental work and modelling.

The length of the appointment will be for 4 years, starting as soon as possible. Candidates should hold a MSc degree with a strong background in geochemistry, petrology, and physics of magmas, skills in numerical modeling, and a taste for field work.

Interested candidates should send their applications including curriculum vitae, a short research statement and the names and addresses of two references to Olivier Bachmann (olivier.bachmann@xxxxxxxxxxxx) in a single pdf-file.
