The glassy, high surface area and high porosity nature of extrusive igneous materials drives fast weathering and elevated aqueous elemental fluxes in active volcanic regions, and is central to the genesis of soils with unique mineralogical, chemical and physical properties. Subsurface and subaerial emissions of volcanic gases, including CO2, SO2, H2S, HCl and HF, and discharge of volcanic hydrothermal waters may also provide an additional source of acidity for weathering, further enhancing elemental fluxes in these environments. Fast weathering of extrusive igneous materials has important ramifications for the biogeochemical cycles of important elements at various temporal and spatial scales. For example, it influences the withdrawal of atmospheric CO2, release of plant nutrients, fluxes of dissolved and particulate elements in rivers and storage of organic C in soils. In this session, we seek contributions emanating from field, laboratory or modelling studies which advance our understanding of volcanic glass/extrusive rock dissolution processes, pathways and rates; elemental weathering fluxes, soil genesis and mineralogy, and soil carbon and nutrient dynamics in volcanic active regions. The results of paleoenvironmental investigations are also welcome.
