Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the 2018 Wegener General Assembly on Earth Deformation and the study of earthquakes using geodesy and geodynamics. This event will take place in Grenoble, France, 10-13th September, 2018, the week following the COV10 meeting in Naples. You will find details of the proposed sessions, relevant dates (Abstract submission opening: 16 Avril 2018, Abstract submission deadline: 15 June 2018), and conference events on the conference website at https://wegener2018.sciencesconf.org

We warmly encourage you to submit a contribution to the volcanology session « Improving understanding of magmatic and volcanic process ». Keynote lecture will be given by A. Peltier, IPGP « Contribution of GNSS to monitor and understand Piton de la Fournaise".

Session summary:

Eruptions dynamics are controlled by magma discharge rates and by the physical properties of magma (a complex mixture of liquid, gas and crystals) as it approaches the Earth's surface.  The physical properties of magma and its ability to reach the surface depend not only on the composition but also on how it interacts with the crust during its journey from depth. Remote sensing, with the launch of recent satellites providing free and regular data, represents a huge opportunity for understanding and monitoring volcanic processes, in particular in the field of geodesy. The largest benefits are expected when geodetic data sets are analyzed as part of a multidisciplinary approach in association with geological and geophysical field measurements and when they are used to test and develop models. We encourage submissions on geodetic and/or multidisciplinary studies of volcanic fields that use either global approaches or focus on specific volcanoes.

We look forward to welcoming you in Grenoble ,

Sincerely,

The Conveners,

Yosuke Aoki- Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo, Japan

Virginie Pinel-ISTerre-Université Savoie-Mont-Blanc, France

Freysteinn Sigmundsson-Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland, Iceland

Tim Wright-Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics, University of Leeds, UK
