Dear colleagues,

In the framework of the upcoming congress “Cities on Volcanoes 10” ( www.citiesonvolcanoes10.com ) that will be held in Naples (Italy) from 2nd to 7th September 2018, we are pleased to invite you to submit a contribution, within the Symposium 2 “Assessing and managing volcanic risk”, to the following session:

S2.4 | Volcanic crisis management and evacuations: recent case studies and best practices.

The management of volcanic crises requires making a number of decisions, the most drastic of which is the evacuation of people living in threatened areas. Many factors pose challenges, including: the extension of the area potentially involved in dangerous phenomena and the number of people living inside it, the condition of evacuation routes, the vulnerability of buildings and bridges along them, the availability of public transportation, etc. These measures are often taken under high uncertainty about the time, the kind and sometimes even the exact place of the expected eruption.

In this session we would like to hear experiences from recent real cases of volcanic crises management, with a special focus on evacuation processes (including cases of self-evacuation or assisted evacuation of a large number of people), as well as management of false alarm and of long lasting volcanic alerts, with additional problems related to sheltering and accommodation for human and animals. Example of exercises are also welcome.

We seek ideas, reflections, suggestions, good practices and, above all, examples of how the matter has been managed and is approached in different countries.

Please note that the deadline for abstract submission is May 10th, 2018.

Feel free to contribute to disseminate this announcement to any interested person and to contact the Conveners for any further information.

We hope to see you in Naples!
