The University of Clermont-Auvergne and Laboratoire Magmas & Volcans at Clermont-Ferrand, France, invites applications for a :

5-year Tenure track position in “Volcanic risks”

Job profile: Research and teaching on the physical, economic and societal impacts of volcanic hazards, vulnerability, resilience, and risk communication.

The candidate will be part of the volcanology group of the “Laboratoire Magmas & Volcans” (http://lmv.univ-bpclermont.fr/). This group is integral to “challenge 4” of I-Site Cap 20-25; this being the group charged with research into “Risks and Socio-Economic Vulnerability Associated with Natural Disasters” (http://i-site-clermont.fr).  Research activities will be focused on physical and socio-economic impacts of volcanic events, hazard–risk evaluation, vulnerability–resilience assessment, and risk/hazard communication strategies.  So as to drive forward in “challenge 4” the candidate will be required to develop collaborative projects with other laboratories involved in this I-Site initiative (i.e., economics, mathematics, human and social sciences, atmospheric physics, law, etc.).  Our aim is to recruit an experienced specialist in the area of volcanic hazards with recognized international experience.  The candidate will play a central role in the development of research activities in the area of volcanic risk, in particular in emerging countries. The I-Site initiative provides grants - from funds already available - to support research projects (in collaboration with our partner departments) that include post-doc and PhD support.

The applicant must be able to teach Earth Sciences in French language from first year undergraduate through final-year Masters.  The teaching load is 64 hours per year during the three first years, and 98 hours per year during the two following years. Teaching duties will include preparation and delivery of lectures, practical exercises, supervised dissertation work and field classes.  This teaching will be principally within the fields of undergraduate “Earth Sciences” and masters level “Earth, Planetary and Environmental Sciences”.  Following the main themes of our teaching department, the applicant must thus be capable of teaching within the areas of “Magmas and Volcanoes”, “Geology and Geotechnical Planning” and “Climate and Atmospheric Sciences” at the University of Clermont Auvergne.  He/She must possess expertise in the areas of volcanology, as well as in the areas of natural hazards and risks.  This latter area of expertise is essential because the candidate will be central to the development an international module “Natural disaster risk reduction and management” to be taught as part of our “Earth, Planetary and Environmental Sciences” course in collaboration with other disciplines; such as economics, psychology, geography, law, etc.
