The Laboratoire Magmas & Volcans (University Clermont Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, France: http://www.lmv.univ-bpclermont.f) invites applications for one postdoctoral research position funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR project RAVEX: http://www.agence-nationale-recherche.fr/Projet-ANR-16-CE03-0002) for a duration of 24 months. The objective of the project is to investigate experimentally the generation of tsunamis by entrance of pyroclastic flows into water. It is now commonly accepted that pyroclastic flows caused large tsunamis in the past (e.g. Krakatau 1883) and there is geological evidence of pyroclastic flows entering water and propagating underwater. However, the detailed triggering mechanisms of tsunamis by pyroclastic flows remain elusive. The selected candidate will use a newly installed 7-m long flume built and will benefit from all technical facilities at Laboratoire Magmas & Volcans.

 

The applicants should have a strong background in fluid dynamics and/or in physical volcanology, and experience in earlier experimental projects will be appreciated. They should send a message of interest and a CV to Raphaël Paris (raphael.paris@xxxxxx) and Olivier Roche (olivier.roche@xxxxxx).
