Dear all,

Outstanding BSc (Hons) or MSc graduates are invited to apply for PhD scholarships, funded through a Marsden grant to Prof. Georg Zellmer. One project addresses the cycle of volatiles in subduction zones through space and time, and will focus on samples from northern Japan and the western Pacific. The other pursues the development and application of the analysis of hydrogen in nominally anhydrous minerals. Successful candidates will mainly be based at Massey University, New Zealand, within the Volcanic Risk Solutions group on the Palmerston North campus. However, long-term study leave (at least one month at a time, up to one year in total) to the University of Hokkaido, Japan, will be required to do some of the analytical work with team members there.

We are looking for candidates that are capable of constructively interacting with a diverse, international group of investigators within the Volcanic Risk Solutions group at Massey University, the Isotope Imaging Laboratory and the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of Hokkaido, and beyond. Successful applicants will have a good numerical background and will gain proficiency in conducting microanalytical work using a range of methods, including electron and ion microbeam techniques. Previous experience with microanalysis as well as with quantitative image processing will be advantageous.

Both scholarships are for three years, and will cover Massey University fees as well as a stipend of NZ$25,000 (equivalent to about 2 million Japanese yen) per year. There is also funding for conference attendance for each student during the period of study.

Deadline for applications is Thursday, 21 December, with an anticipated start date on 1 March 2018 or shortly thereafter. Applications should be sent by email to Georg Zellmer (g.f.zellmer@xxxxxxxxxxxx) and should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, and contact details of three or more  professional referees. We anticipate to conduct Skype interviews with shortlisted candidates in the second week of January.

Both scholarships will be awarded on basis of merit.

Best,

Georg Zellmer
