Dear Colleagues,

The Department of Mineral Sciences within the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History will be advertising two Federal Research Geologist positions within the next 2 months. When the positions open, the position announcements will appear on USA Jobs; all application materials will need to be submitted through USA Jobs.

One position is in Petrology. Preference will be given to those whose primary research focuses on the petrology of crustal rocks including, but not limited to, metamorphic rocks, granites and intrusive rocks, ore deposits, and continental rocks.

One position is in Mineralogy. Preference will be given to those whose primary research studies on the chemistry, structure, and crystallography of minerals, with a focus on sample-based, rather than theoretical, research. The successful candidate will take a lead role in curating the National Gem and Mineral Collection.

The Dept. of Mineral Sciences houses the National Rock & Ore Collection (the largest curated collection of rock and ore samples in the world), the National Gem and Mineral Collections (comprising more than 350,000 mineral and 11,000 gem samples), and the National Meteorite Collection (containing more than 45,000 meteorite, tektite, and related specimens); samples from these collections are used a broad array of research and public programs within the Smithsonian and throughout the world.

The successful candidates will have strong track records of published research commensurate with their levels of experience.   Applicants should fully utilize existing analytical strengths of the Department, including field emission electron microprobe, variable pressure field emission analytical SEM, FTIR, XRD, RAMAN, fluid inclusion heating/freezing unit, cathodoluminescence microscope and spectrometer, wet chemistry and biomineralogy laboratory, and experimental petrology and volcanology laboratories. The successful candidates will be expected to participate in museum activities and to be involved with professional associations and other organizations within the scientific community.

These positions will be full time 4-year appointments at the GS-12 level, with full benefits. US citizenship is required for both positions. As these will be Federal positions, ALL application materials will need to be submitted through USA Jobs.  Application materials sent to members of the Department, including the contacts below, will not be considered.
