Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to our session at the AGU Fall Meeting (11-15 December 2017, New Orleans). This interdisciplinary session in Atmospheric Sciences is cross-listed with Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology, Global Environmental Change and Biogeosciences.

A047 - Heterogeneous Reactions between Solids and Gases in the Atmosphere: Insights from Field, Modelling and Laboratory Studies

Understanding processes affecting the atmospheric composition is essential to assessing its role in element cycles (e.g., C, Fe, N, S), climate regulation and air pollution. Heterogeneous reactions between airborne solid particles and gaseous species are increasingly recognised as capable of influencing local to regional scale atmospheric chemical budgets as well as particle effects on radiation and cloud properties. However, large uncertainties remain in the importance of such solid-gas reactions relative to gas-phase chemistry, their underlying mechanisms, and their atmospheric, climatic and health implications. This session welcomes studies on reactions of solid particles including mineral dust, volcanic ash and anthropogenic aerosols with gaseous species such as NOy, SO2, O3, HOx and organic compounds of atmospheric relevance. It aims to draw researchers using field, modelling and laboratory (e.g., Knudsen cell, flow-tube reactor, smog chamber) approaches - from molecular to macro scale - to better understand atmospheric heterogeneous reactions and their direct/indirect impacts.
