Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We wish to invite you to the 2017 Annual Workshop of the European Seismological Commission (ESC) - Working Group on Volcano Seismology co-sponsored by the IASPEI/IAVCEI Inter-Association Commission on Volcano Seismology. The workshop will be held in Port Vila, Vanuatu from 23 to 27 September 2017 and includes an optional field trip to Yasur Volcano from 27 to 30 September.  This is the 26th meeting of the working group which focuses on aspects of volcano seismology and interdisciplinary studies from a wide range of global volcanoes.  This year, we will focus on volcano monitoring in developing countries, with specific focus on methods and techniques that may be applicable to these important settings.  We encourage participants from the volcano-seismology community and other disciplines to join us in Vanuatu, a country with several active volcanoes and a vibrant friendly community.

The workshop will be held at the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) with accommodation at the nearby Melanesian Hotel in Port Vila, the capital and main port city in Vanuatu.

Yasur volcano is located on Tanna Island which is a short flight from the capital. From the Tanna airport you can travel via 4WD to your accommodation at the base of the volcano.  Yasur is accessible from the accommodation via a short 4WD trip or an hour long walk and offers near field observation of persistent small scale strombolian eruptions.

The Workshop costs in Port Vila are approximately 575 Euros, which includes

4 nights accommodation at the Melanesian Hotel, full board for 3 days (breakfast, tea, coffee breaks, lunch and dinner), workshop venue costs, taxi transports from the airport to the hotel and back.

For the optional field excursion, participants should anticipate costs for airfare, transfers and accommodation in Tanna#.

Airfares to Tanna will vary but at the time of writing were ~210 Euro return.

We have negotiated the following accommodation with Jungle Oasis Bungalows

3 nights accommodation and full board                                               37 Euro/night (3 nights)

Transfer from airport (per vehicle (one way))                                     100 Euro*

Park entry fee                                                                                              ~60 euro/entry

The thumbnail itinerary is as follows:

23-27 September In Port Vila

Worskshop (24, 25, 26 sept)

27 Fly to Tanna

27 28 29 (three nights in Tanna)- 2 full days at the volcano

30 Return to Vila and depart                                                    ~60 euro/entry

*Transfer costs may be reduced by sharing the transfer with additional riders.

#Participants should anticipate some variation in costs due to local currency exchange and should assure that they hold sufficient local currency for the costs plus contingencies.
