In deference to those still awaiting word on funding grants to attend the 2017 IAVCEI Scientific Assembly in Portland, Oregon, the local planning committee has decided to extend the deadline for early bird conference registration until June 16, 2017.  This extension applies only to registration for the conference.  The deadline to register for field trips and workshops remains June 1, 2017. This deadline is driven by vendor requests for final counts of lodging needs (as field trips occur during peak tourist season). At the registration website (iavcei2017.org), one can register for a field trip or workshop without having to register for the conference. Your registration can be modified later to add conference registration.  After June 16, conference registration rates will increase by $100 (except for K–12 teachers and emergency managers who qualify for the special 1-day registration option).

Please also note that as of May 15, 60% of the rooms on reserve at the headquarters hotel, Hilton Portland & Executive Tower (located at 921 SW 6th Avenue in the heart of downtown Portland), have been booked. To get the special IAVCEI discount pricing at this hotel, rooms must be reserved by July 23, 2017.  Registrations must be booked through the conference website. Any reservations made after this date will be charged market rate. Because the conference coincides with the peak of tourist season, and is close to the timing of a total solar eclipse, hotel rooms in Portland are scarce and pricing is at a premium. The headquarters Hilton hotel provides excellent access to downtown Portland, and a short 10–15 minute ride on Portland’s light rail (MAX) provides convenient access between downtown Portland and the Oregon Convention Center. The light rail system also serves Portland International Airport and provides easy access from the airport to downtown, with a stop only two blocks from the Hilton hotel.  All conference registrants will be provided with a light rail pass, valid for travel on MAX, buses and Portland streetcars during the conference.

We encourage you to take advantage of early bird registration for the conference, register for any of the field trips and workshops still open, and take advantage of the special pricing and convenient location of the headquarters Hilton hotel.  We look forward to seeing you in Portland.

Co-chair, IAVCEI 2017 planning committee
