IAVCEI 2017 Pre-Meeting Workshops: August 12 and 13
7. Using GPS to Monitor Volcanoes: From Field Data to Modeling

Workshop conveners/affiliations/emails:

Maurizio Battaglia, USGS/VDAP, Sapienza – UniRoma
Mike Lisowski, US Geological Survey
Kyle Anderson, US Geological Survey

Contact M. Battaglia for more information mbattaglia@xxxxxxxv

Description of workshop: The precise measurement of ground deformation using GPS is now an essential tool to monitor volcanic unrest, and mathematical models of how a volcano deform are required to characterize driving processes and constrain the source location, depth and volume change.

This pre-conference workshop will focus on four scientific and technical themes

  • Lisowski - Designing a GPS network optimized for monitoring, data processing and modelling
  • Battaglia - Introduction to modeling volcanic deformation
  • Battaglia - Modeling volcanic deformation with dMODELS
  • Anderson - Physics based models of volcanic deformation

dMODELS, a free USGS software to model crustal deformation near active faults
and volcanic centers [pubs.usgs.gov/tm/13/b1/], will be distributed to participants

Requirements of participants: Participants will need a laptop (OS either Windows or Linux) with the latest version of the free Matlab Runtime installed: R2017a (9.2). The Matlab Runtime is available online at www.mathworks.com/products/compiler/mcr/

Registration Cost/participant: $170
