Multi-Volcanic Hazard Impact - PhD Scholarship – University of Canterbury (NZ)

We invite applicants to apply for a fully funded PhD position in volcanic hazard impact assessment in New Zealand.

The project aims to co-develop a multi-volcanic hazard impact assessment framework with distributed infrastructure networks and agricultural sectors in the Taranaki region of New Zealand.  Emphasis will be on A) exploring development of vulnerability models for cascading, compounding and interacting hazards and B) engaging with a variety of stakeholders to co-produce appropriate and relevant decision support tools.

There is scope to modify the project according to the successful candidate’s interests and expertise.

The project is part of the Natural Hazard Research Platform funded grant “Quantifying exposure to specific and multiple volcanic hazards” (2016-19)), and involves working within a highly motivated, diverse team across several institutions. Researchers likely to play a role in the project include Assoc Prof Jon Proctor (Massey University), Prof Mark Bebbington (Massey University), Dr Carol Stewart (Massey University/GNS Science), Prof Shane Cronin (Auckland University), Dr Ben Kennedy (University of Canterbury), Dr Natalia Deligne (GNS Science), and Dr Mary-Anne Thompson (University of Auckland

The successful candidate must possess strong quantitative and/or computational skills, and would ideally have strong expertise in natural hazard impact/risk assessment and geospatial analysis.  Experience in stakeholder engagement would be valuable.

The project will be based at the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand) supervised by Assoc Prof Tom Wilson (senior supervisor, University of Canterbury).  Final composition of the supervision panel will be determined once the candidate has met the team and begun to develop their project.

The scholarship will cover all tuition fees, all reasonable research costs (including travel to international conferences), and a stipend of NZ$25,000/year for three years.

If you are interested, please send a CV and short cover letter to Tom Wilson (thomas.wilson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx.nz).  There is no closing deadline, but we will ideally fill the position within the next three months.
