Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) has approved the creation of a new commission in volcano geodesy!

The proposed goals of the commission are to:

1) Foster communication within the volcano geodesy community.

2) Facilitate a coordinated geodetic response to volcanic unrest and eruptions around the world.

3) Ensure high-level geodetic capability at the world’s volcanoes through capacity building and sharing of best practices, technology, and software.

4) Support the establishment and maintenance of databases for volcano geodetic observations.

5) Promote volcano geodesy as a tool with broad implications and diverse applications in research, monitoring, and crisis response.

6) Encourage and enable collaborations between geodesy and other disciplines.

As a first organizing activity, anyone interested in participating in the new commission is invited to attend a splinter meeting at EGU on Thursday, April 27, at 12:15-13:15 in room 0.15.  At the meeting, we will discuss the structure of the commission, obtaining funding for commission activities, and the design of a communication plan (e.g., listserv, website, workshops, etc.).

If you are not able to attend EGU, don't worry -- you can send ideas or thoughts that you would like to discuss to Mike Poland (mpoland@xxxxxxxx).  There will also be an opportunity to participate in implementing the commission through a larger kick-off meeting, which is being planned for the 2017 IAVCEI Scientific Assembly in Portland, Oregon, this August.

Best wishes,
The IAVCEI Volcano Geodesy Commission proponents
(Jose Fernandez, Giuseppe Puglisi, Elske de Zeeuw-van Dalfsen, Freysteinn Sigmundsson, Susi Ebmeier, Nicolas d'Oreye, Aline Peltier, Yosuke Aoki, Emily Montgomery-Brown, and Mike Poland)
