A USGS-NSF internship is currently available to undertake research on volcanic lightning with the U.S. Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Washington.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Volcanic lightning is a powerful new tool to monitor the behavior of explosive eruptions. Yet many important questions remain unanswered. We seek a graduate student researcher from the areas of atmospheric science, volcanology, or computer science to examine the causes and consequences of volcanic lightning, and to devise innovative applications at USGS volcano observatories. The goal of the internship is to integrate lightning detection from the World Wide Lightning Location Network into volcano monitoring operations within the USGS. We seek applicants interested in:

1. investigating relationships between globally detected volcanic lightning and eruption dynamics, and/or
2. developing new ways to integrate lightning data into existing data streams.

LOCATION

The Cascades Volcano Observatory is located in Vancouver, Washington, within short driving distance of Portland, Oregon, and great hiking in the Columbia River Gorge and Cascade Range volcanoes. The internship will involve working closely with colleagues at the University of Washington and the USGS Alaska Volcano Observatory, and will provide opportunities for summer fieldwork in the Cascades and/or Alaska.

DETAILS & ELIGIBILITY

Internship support of $5K is available to the successful applicant through a partnership with NSF. At present, only students who are currently supported by NSF funding are eligible to apply—this may be in the form of a graduate research fellowship, or any active NSF research grant (regardless of named or PI status). Ultimately, the selected applicant will need to submit an NSF supplement request by 4 December 2016, which includes the following:

1. letter of support from the university;
2. letter of support from the main academic advisor; and
3. a 3-5 page research proposal with budget + biographical sketch
