Dear colleagues,
I’m pleased to announce that the 40th Annual Mineral Deposits Studies Group Meeting will be held this year at the University of Bristol from Monday 19th to Wednesday 21st December.
MDSG is a specialist group of the Geological Society and the Mineralogical Society that promotes the study and understanding of mineral deposits and mineralisation processes. The meeting will showcase the latest mineral deposit research from both academia and industry, and there will be a particular focus this year on the relationship between mineralisation and volcanism.
Full information can be found on the conference website:
A few things to note:
Early-bird registration rates for professionals, PhD students, and MSc students will apply until Friday 18th November and final registration will close on Friday 2nd December. Undergraduate registration will open on Monday 14th November. Registration fees include an Icebreaker Reception and a Conference Banquet in the Wills Memorial Building, lunches and teas on both conference days, an abstract volume, and a conference pack.
The deadline for abstract submission is Friday 18th November. Abstracts must be submitted via the link on the website using the template provided. Contributions are invited on any topic related to mineral deposits and are particularly welcome from postgraduate students wishing to report research in progress. We will give as many early career scientists as possible the opportunity to make oral presentations. Following the deadline, abstracts will be organised into sessions with a common theme.
Our keynote speakers this year include:
Richard Sillitoe, Consultant - Volcanoes and Porphyry Deposits (a kick-off lecture before the Icebreaker)
Matthew Field, Amec Foster Wheeler - Kimberlite volcanology and diamond resource evaluation
Cam McCuaig, BHP Billiton - Mineral Systems: Key to Exploration Targeting
Jeremy Richards, University of Alberta - Tectonomagmatic controls on arc metallogeny
Alison Rust, University of Bristol - Physics of volcanoes and ore deposits
John Thompson, Cornell University - Changing World - Changing Exploration
Frances Wall, Camborne School of Mines - Responsible sourcing of critical metals
The University of Bristol SEG Student Chapter is organising two events at the meeting:
(1) A pre-conference field trip to Dolaucothi Gold Mines in South Wales on Sunday 18th December.
(2) A student networking afternoon on Monday 19th December.
Full information about both events can be found on the website. To register your interest for either one, please email Rebecca.Perkins@bristol.ac.uk or Edward.Bunker@bristol.ac.uk .
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
We look hope to see you in December!
Best wishes,
Frances Cooper and the MDSG 2016 Organising Committee
