Hello all - please pass this along to potential applicants.

I am looking for applicants to two physical volcanology-themed PhD projects at WVU to start in August 2017.

Project 1 - Physical volcanology and volcanic stratigraphy of silicic supereruptions in the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico, with co-supervisors Pablo Davila-Harris (IPICYT), Cathy Busby (UC Davis), and Amy Weislogel (WVU). Applicants should have considerable experience of stratigraphy and geological mapping. An ability to speak Spanish or to learn is beneficial.

Project 2 - Understanding the emplacement of welded and rheomorphic tuffs through strain analysis, with co-supervisors Kelly Russell (UBC) and Sarah Brown (NETL Morgantown). Applicants should have considerable experience of structural geology and geological mapping. An ability to conduct extensive, independent fieldwork in the western U.S. and at sites in northern and southern Europe is essential.

Applicants should contact Graham Andrews before applying to the WVU Eberly College of Arts and Sciences graduate program. Applicants holding a Masters degree are preferred.

Successful applicants will be supported by teaching and research assistantships for up to four academic years, including summers. Competitive scholarships are available from WVU for exceptional candidates.

WVU is a research intensive university in Morgantown, West Virginia, approximately 90 minutes south of Pittsburgh, PA, and 4 hours from Washington D.C. Morgantown is an affordable location surrounded by beautiful scenery and limitless outdoor activities (kayaking, caving, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, etc.).

Thanks,

Graham
