New Job Opening for IT Specialist at the USGS California Volcano Observatory.

POSITION:  IT Specialist, GS-2210-12, in Menlo Park CA. Permanent position.

SALARY & BENEFITS:  $84,302.00 to $109,592.00  per year (new federal employees will be hired at $84,302). Promotion potential up to GS-13.  Full benefits including health insurance, retirement benefits and more.  Moving expenses to Menlo Park, CA are authorized.

DUTIES: As an Information Technology Specialist within the USGS California Volcano Observatory, some of your specific duties will include:

• Develops and maintains new and existing software custom written for the purpose of volcano research and monitoring. Includes data analysis visualization and interpretation, data storage, management and transport, creation and dissemination of time-critical forecasts of volcanic hazards, and creation of numerical models of various volcanic processes or effects such as ash plumes, lava flows or lahars.

• Coordinates software and database development with peers working at other volcano observatories.

• Develops and maintains new and existing scientific databases, including schema and query design and optimization for a large variety of data types. Integrates databases with new or existing volcano research and monitoring software.

• Serves as the senior system administrator, Certified Organizational Unit Administrator, Security Point of Contact for the local office.

• Supervises IT Specialists responsible for desktop support, installation of software, and data backups. • Advises on IP-based telemetry options and architecture for instrument configuration and maintenance.
