Dear Colleagues,

We would like to bring to your attention Session GMPV5.7 "Minerals as keys to understanding magma reservoir processes and unrest timescales" in the program group "GMPV5: Magmatic and volcanic processes" at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2016 in Vienna, Austria, 17-22 April 2016.

GMPV5.7
Minerals as keys to understanding magma reservoir processes and unrest timescales

The session focuses on how the compositions and/or textures of mineral phases at the ?m to mm scale are being used to reconstruct pre-eruptive magmatic conditions and to constrain the timescales of magmatic processes, with the aim of improving volcanic risk mitigation. The session is concerned with the petrological methods available for investigating crustal magmatic processes, as these allow us to reconstruct the history of melt inclusions trapped in crystals during growth, to estimate P, T, volatile contents and melt composition, and to estimate timescales of crystal residence, magma chamber growth and recharge, and eruption triggering processes.
We also welcome contributions yielding insights into processes such as pre-eruptive magma accumulation, migration and mixing in order to link the petrological record (representing pre-eruptive magma chamber conditions) to the surface monitoring records which comprise our pre-eruptive observations. Ultimately, the aim is to better understand what geophysical unrest signals represent at the magma chamber, in order to improve monitoring and hazard mitigation.

Please consider submitting your abstract to our session. The deadline for abstract submission is 13 Jan 2016, 13:00 CET

Convener:
Hélène Balcone-Boissard (ISTEP, UPMC, France)

Co-Conveners:
Georges Boudon (IPGP, France)
Dan J. Morgan (Univ. Leeds, Great Britain)
Massimo D'Antonio (Univ. Federico II, Naples, Italy)

Hope to see you in Vienna,
Hélène, Georges, Dan, Massimo
